Statement

I am a visual and performance artist, working within the field of live art performance, installation & sculpture. I explore the relationship between identity, ideology and the body in both my sculpture and performance pieces. Being raised in Socialist Yugoslavia and living in London for past 15 years, issues of the disintegration of social and political systems, displacement and memory inform my work.

I have studied performance art, sculpture and physical theatre and have been involved in a variety of theatre and art projects since 1989. I started my artistic journey as an experimental & physical theatre performer at first. Since 1999, my increasing interest in the visual arts has taken me into areas of devising, designing and directing alongside creating sculptures and installation centred around the human body.

In August 2007 I started the Performance Klub Fiskulturnik project with the aim of developing artwork inspired by the human body, physical exercise and the corporeal and visual heritage of ex - communist societies. Based on the idea of the Fiskulturnik – a cultured athletic worker imagined by the Constructivist Avant garde and exploited by socialist realism - my intention was to create participatory ways of communicating with the viewer through live art performances.

Investigating the notion of embodiment through re-enacting archived physical exercise manuals, using them as a language, forms an important creative strategy for Performance Klub Fiskulturnik projects. In most PK Fiskulturnik performances, the viewers are asked to be active participants rather then passive observers and the communication happens beyond words – directly to and through the body, each performance thus becoming a unique collective experience.
